I cannot understand why English clubs dislike the Europa League so much – it might not be as lucrative as the CL (they get enough from the English TV money anyway) but it is a trophy and one of only 4 a season that the club can go for, and realistically likely one of three to go for as the League Championship isn’t an option, and if a club isn’t interested in winning a trophy what is the point of them playing if all they want is league position for the money?
As the money only gets spent on better players and higher wages to get a better league position or maintain the status quo anyway, its a catch 22 situation with no end product like a cup. They might as well spend the money on investments to make money rather than on players if making money is all that matters.
The distance travelled especially for qualifiers isn’t an excuse either as 1. The distances for the Europa League are a lot less than going to the USA or Asia, Australia or the Middle East. 2. A competitive qualifier is much better preparation than a meaningless friendly and should give clubs an advantage at the start of the season. 3. The distance is immaterial as they travel in luxury anyway, they don’t have to walk it, but playing in Europe would be better for their body clock and less jet lag, plus not being sat on a plane for as long.
What is the point on spending millions on players that with wages cost more than a club can actually get in prize money if there is no trophy to display at the end of it? its the economics of an idiot and like spending £200 in a fruit machine to win the £100 jackpot and thinking you’re a winner. My club Pompey are now in League 2, but from their years in the Premier League I can’t remember actual finishing positions, but do remember winning the FA Cup and getting to a 2nd final, and getting the rare chance to see my team play the likes of AC Milan in a competitive match – that’s the sort of memories a fan should want from their club not the thought they got an extra couple of million quid to waste imo. I bet a Norwich fan can’t recall all their final league positions, but does remember winning 1-0 away to Bayern Munich in Europe (even I remember it and I don’t support them), that imo is what supporting a club is all about, the glory nights, the memories and the trophies not a few extra quid in the players bank accounts as that’s where it ends up.
