Having been a long-time supporter (since the early 80’s) and been through these events before and come out the otherside, I sadly now fear the worst after reading the statement issued by the clubs administrators today and I fear it could be the end of the club in its current form and league status (the full statement can be read at Portsmouth FC), as the club is running out of money and may not be able to fulfil this seasons fixtures – the general gist being there is no more funding from parachute payments as according to a prior agreement it will be going to ex-owner Sacha Gaydamak.
If the club were to fold and be liquidated it will be a sad day for us Pompey fans and the city of Portsmouth in general, and the repercussions will reverberate throughout The Championship due to Pompey’s record this season being expunged so teams Pompey have beaten will gain over those that have beaten us, as they’ll lose their points e.g. West Ham will lose 6 points, but Southampton only 1.
Hopefully the club will survive and a buyer with the finances to save the club will be found, but if not and this is the end of Portsmouth FC in its current form, let’s hope Pompey are re-born and work their way back like others (Aldershot for one) have done before, and I’m sure with the loyal backing the club has, that it’ll be back in the league before long and stronger than ever. In the meantime please visit Pompeys 12th Man and pledge your support for the club and the sterling effort being carried out to try and save it.
